Philip Pettit, Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor in the University Center for Human Values delivered the Wilson H. Elkins Lecture at the University of Baltimore School of Law in early October. Pettit’s talk, “Freedom in the Republic” opened the inaugural republicanism symposium involving prospective contributors to the Oxford Handbook of Republicanism. Professor Pettit is one of several noted scholars associated with the revival of republican thinking in political philosophy. His book, Republicanism: A Theory of Freedom and Government, published in 1997, won the Benjamin E. Lippincott Award in 2019 which is awarded by the American Political Science Association.
