Peter Singer on shifting to a plant-based diet in the New York Times

April 24, 2023

In tandem with Earth Day, the guest essay “Fix Your Diet, Save the Planet” written by Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values, was featured in the Opinion section of The New York Times on April 22. He believes that “we can do something for the planet every time we eat” and that even cutting our consumption of animal products in half can have a substantial impact on climate change due to a decrease in methane production. In addition to climate change, Professor Singer outlines several societal considerations such as deforestation, carbon emissions, mass extinctions and factory farming and how these are equally excellent reasons to make an Earth Day resolution to stop eating meat.
