Marc Fleurbaey, the Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies and Professor of Public Affairs and the University Center for Human Values, has just published "Beyond GDP: Measuring Welfare and Sustainability," co-authored with Didier Blanchet.
The book argues that GDP focuses on an unduly narrow set of aspects of individual lives and considers a range of leading alternative indicators of social welfare. Fleurbaey and Blanchet then propose a distinctive approach that is capable of respecting the diversity of preferences and values in a society and incorporating a proper concern with questions of sustainability.
