UCHV’s Academic Freedom Initiative will have its first event this coming Monday, October 2. The gathering will pursue two tasks: scholars will revisit the normative and legal bases of academic freedom; and a number of colleagues from different universities from around the world will investigate why and how academic freedom is being attacked – and what kinds of defenses might be successful in particular circumstances. The event is also held under the auspices of the project “Constitutionalism Under Stress,” part of the strategic partnership between Princeton University and Humboldt University in Berlin. The president of Humboldt, Julia von Blumenthal will offer remarks on academic freedom, as will Princeton’s Chris Eisgruber.
