ABSTRACT:  A discussion of the changing ways in which work fits into the main ethical project: making a life. Globalization and automation are seen as posing challenges for many kinds of workers.  What - if anything - can philosophy say about the appropriate social response?

Kwame Anthony Appiah is a professor of philosophy and law at New York University; the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and the University Center for Human Values, Emeritus, Princeton University.
