Christopher Eisgruber '83, the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Public Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and the University Center for Human Values, was elected by the University's Board of Trustees on Sunday to serve as the University's 20th president, effective July 1, 2013.

Professor Eisgruber has been on the faculty of the Center since moving to Princeton from New York University Law School in 2001 and has served as Princeton's provost for the last nine years.  His research has focused on the Supreme Court's appointments process, religious freedom and civil liberties, and the relationship between constitutionalism and democratic self-government.  Professor Eisgruber will succeed Shirley M. Tilghman, who last fall announced her intention to step down as president at the end of this academic year.
