Sarah McGrath, assistant professor of philosophy, has been named Laurance S. Rockefeller University Preceptor for the three-year period beginning in July 2011. The appointment is made by the Dean of the Faculty on the recommendation of the UCHV Executive Committee and after consultation with the University's "Committee of Three." The preceptorship is awarded to outstanding assistant professors whose work is devoted in significant measure to ethical issues.

The Rockefeller Preceptorship provides a leave of absence and other support for the furtherance of the incumbent's scholarship. It also affords an opportunity to engage the intellectual community of the University Center and to participate in its activities. During her preceptorship, Professor McGrath plans to finish a book manuscript, tentatively entitled Knowledge in the Moral Domain. The book is a study of justification in ethics, focusing in particular on the variety of ways in which experience can contribute to moral knowledge, the threat posed to such knowledge by disagreement, and the possibility of moral expertise.
