Nan Keohane’s book Thinking about Leadership was published in December by Princeton University Press. The book brings together Keohane’s training and professional vocation as a political theorist with insights from her experience as a college and university president from 1981-2004. The book is designed to be a work of theoretical exploration in which familiarity with the territory allows the author to bring depth to the discussion. Paraphrasing Machiavelli’s dedication to Lorenzo de’ Medici in The Prince, her purpose is to consider leadership both from the “outside,” as a theorist, and from the “inside” as a practitioner. Leadership as a basic human activity, in its many different manifestations, is the topic of the book.
