Jan-Werner Mueller, a member of the UCHV executive committee, will debate the concept of constitutional patriotism with the president of the German parliament in Berlin on July 4, 2011. Mueller is the author of a book on constitutional patriotism, a term which denotes the attachment of citizens to political values and principles rather than a shared national culture, in the way liberal nationalists envision. The president of the German parliament, Norbert Lammert, is a leading proponent of the rival concept of Leitkultur (guiding culture), which is comparable to liberal nationalism.
