Miranda Spieler, an LSR Visiting Fellow at the University Center for Human Values in 2007-08, recently published the book Empire and Underworld: Captivity in French Guiana with the Harvard University Press. The book, which she worked on during her time at Princeton, examines the relationship between law and violence in French Guiana, which she considers both as a site of criminal exile and as a small frontier society of slaves, freed people, Maroon tribes, and non-European immigrants.
