Professor Alan Ryan has been appointed acting director of the Values and Public Life undergraduate certificate program at the University Center for Human Values for the 2012-2013 academic year. Professor Ryan is lecturer with the rank of professor in politics and will be directing the undergraduate certificate program during Melissa Lane’s academic leave. His interests range from the philosophy of social science and the history of liberalism to theories of ownership and the problems of higher education and contemporary politics. His published works include The Philosophy of the Social Sciences, The Philosophy of John Stuart Mill, Bertrand Russell: A Political Life, John Dewey and the High Tide of American Liberalism, Property and Political Theory, and The Making of Modern Liberalism.
